I have Peterson tuners and it does sound better for chords to use the special tuning, especially the open D chord. So to make a chord you play several notes on different instruments. realize most band instruments only play 1 note.

I told her that made no sense, and her response was that it is commonly done, and it makes the chords played by the various instruments sound better. She tried to explain to me once that certain instruments in the band would tune their A to one frequency, and other instruments would tune their A to a different frequency. She played several instruments and also sang. She won several awards, including best drum major at a big competition, and her band marched in the parade for the Calgary Stampede. In fact in high school she was the drum major her senior year, and the assistant drum major her junior year. My daughter was a band geek in high school, and studied music ed at college. JOC has anyone with a cents tuner tried Taylor's tuning method? In summary, although the Hz tuning was slightly more accurate, it wasn't anything to get too excited about. According to my reading, the conversion is a logarithmic function and though I majored in mathematics, my math has gotten very rusty with age. I think the reason is that the conversion to HZ changes dramatically with higher octaves so probably not a good test. I then fine tuned based on the recommended frequencies (above) and found a very slight improvement comparing the two chords.įinally I decided to try James Taylor's suggestions based on the approximation of 1 cent = 1/4 Hz as follows:

The chords moving up the neck sounded OK to my ear.

The numbers in parentheses are the recommended frequencies in the documentation. Why didn't I think of that! I first tuned my Tele just using the standard SNARK tuning and then checked the corresponding Hz frequencies.
